Using the materials
Materials - Improving learning in mathematics
In the following pages we include guidance on how you could use the 'Materials' section. This includes an explanation of the way in which the sessions have been categorised, the method used to indicate the level of challenge and a guide to the structure of the sessions. There is also a guide to the Software and Professional development menus on this disc.
These materials exemplify the ideas and approaches adopted in the Standards Unit pilot. To get best value from them, we recommend that you use them in association with the guidance and other materials in the resource.
The short book 'Improving learning in mathematics: challenges and strategies'
that is included in the resource is essential reading for anyone wanting to make best use of these materials.
The following are some specific hints and guidance:
- These sessions are offered as examples of the approaches to teaching and learning that we have developed in our pilot. They have all been revised and developed in the light of the trials but you should still regard them as examples and suggestions that you can build on.
- They are not prescriptive nor is there any attempt to 'cover' any particular syllabus or specification.
