Serious dominoes: Multiple representation of number

Many learners come to Engineering expecting it to be a practical, hands-on subject and are unprepared for the Mathematics involved. They may lack basic skills such as translating decimals into fractions and vice versa.
The activity is based on the game of dominoes which introduces an element of fun but with a serious purpose: it is a form of assessment for learning that can reveal to both teachers and learners where difficulties and misconceptions lie.
The same approach can be adapted for use in other types of calculation.
