Planning to use effective approaches for teaching Mathematics

The video clip shows teachers and learners exploring approaches that foster discussion and reflection. The learners discuss topics in algebra but their discussions can be generalised to any topic in Mathematics. It is an extract from the resource Learning Mathematics through discussion and reflection (LSDA 2002), which shows some active approaches that foster deeper understanding in algebra through discussion and reflection.

Thinking points

  • Why is it important to promote discussion in Mathematics sessions?
  • You will see learners describing an activity for other learners. How could you use this in a session?
  • How do card activities and poster work promote discussion?

Use the reflective notebook below to record your thinking.
