Exploring the approaches
In this section is a video taken from a continuing professional development session. Here you will see a group of teachers taking on the role of learners. They are exploring different approaches to teaching Mathematics before using them in their own sessions.
In the first clip a Subject Learning Coach introduces the group to poster work. In the second clip the teachers use mini-whiteboards, explore the use of misleading newspaper headlines and piece together a triangular jig-saw.
The session being used in these clips is Collecting and interpreting data: Session 2. This can be accessed from the Sessions section of this resource.
Thinking points
- The teachers use four headings to organise their thoughts. Is there a Mathematics topic in your vocational area that can be explored in a similar way using the same headings?
- As you watch the video compile a list of the positive ways posters can be used to place Mathematics in context.
- How does the poster stimulate discussion during this session?
- How can a poster activity foster small group work?
Use the reflective notebook below to record your thinking.
