Working with a Subject Learning Coach

Linda has been working with Carol, a colleague and subject learning coach in Mathematics. Together they have developed a scheme of work to help their child care learners understand relevant topics in Mathematics. They have identified proportion as a topic that learners find challenging and they have decided to concentrate on this problem as part of a series of practical sessions on making "play dough".

The first clip features an extract from session one of six sessions. The second clip learners reflect with Linda and Carol on the session. In the remaining clips, Linda and Carol reflect on the learning that has taken place, discuss practical issues about classroom management and begin planning the next session in the scheme of work.

Clip 1 can also be viewed in the Challenges section of this resource.

Thinking points

In this clip Linda and Carol reflect on the session.

  • What do you think the benefits are to teachers of working in a collaborative way?
  • There is some evidence that collaboration on its own isn't enough - the discussion also needs to be critically reflective. How can you ensure that collaboration is genuinely reflective?
  • What sort of questions would teachers need to ask of each other to help this process?

Use the reflective notebook below to record your thinking.
